Good Side of Cell Phone

In an earlier blog, I suggested that people should learn when to shut off their cell phones. However, there are some good things about the device.

The other night, I was in Burlingame, taking in a nonleague football game between Los Altos and Mills high schools. While the game was rather forgettable (Los Altos won, 35-0), things happened at Burlingame that made the cell phone necessary.

The lightning started in the first quarter, causing concerns for referee Mike McCarron. While the game proceeded, a phone call was made to Roberta Gonzales, CBS5s weather anchor.

She reported that, though a front was heading toward Burlingame, it would just produce some rain. She also explained that there was no thunder following some of the lightning strikes because the lightning was cloud-to-cloud.

Nearly seven minutes into the second quarter, a lightning strike clearly went cloud-to-ground, causing a large thunderstorm. McCarron couldnt raise his arms quick enough, stopping the clock and ordering the players off the field. Another call was placed to Gonzales, who said that the storm grew in intensity since the previous call.

She was happy to hear that the game was being stopped for the safety of the players. She also advised that, when that band of clouds passed, the weather would be fine for the rest of the evening. She was right.

During the 30-minute delay, McCarron said if another lightning bolt occurred, the remainder of the game would be suspended. The information conveyed by the cell phone made life a bit easier.

While its true that most people still havent got a clue of when to use the cell phone, Fridays situation proved that cell phones have their place.
